A basement became one of the defining laboratories of the modern roguelite.
The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth rebuilt Edmund McMillen’s 2011 game around repeated runs that rarely unfolded the same way twice.
Each descent started from scratch, but the run quickly took on a character of its own. An early item might push Isaac toward one style of play, only for a later pickup to twist that build into something stranger. Success came from learning how the pieces interacted, then making the best of whatever appeared.
That made repetition feel like discovery. Losing a run still taught you something about the dungeon or the possibilities hidden in its enormous item pool.
Rebirth turned that design into a much larger, expandable foundation. Its success helped make the action roguelite a defining tradition of modern independent game design.
