RollerCoaster Tycoon let players build the rides they wished existed.
Chris Sawyer’s 1999 game arrived after earlier theme-park simulations, but put detailed roller-coaster construction at the centre of the experience.
Players built coasters piece by piece, then watched the game decide whether their creation was exciting or terrifying. But a spectacular ride was only part of the job. Guests had their own reactions, and a park that looked impressive could still fail if people struggled to find their way around or refused to ride what you had built.
That balance between creative freedom and readable simulation became a lasting model for theme-park games. The pleasure came from building something, opening it to the public and watching the consequences unfold.
Its influence even reached beyond games, inspiring future theme-park and roller-coaster designers.
