Six degrees of freedom changed how a shooter could feel.
Developed by Parallax Software in 1995, Descent put the player inside a spacecraft and sent it through claustrophobic mining tunnels. Unlike the floor-bound shooters of the period, these spaces had no reliable up or down.
The ship could move freely through space and roll until the ceiling became the floor. Robots could attack from above or behind, and finding your way through a mine became part of the challenge. Destroying the reactor then turned navigation into a frantic race back to the exit.
That freedom became Descent’s historical signature. Its fully 3D environments helped establish the six-degrees-of-freedom shooter as a recognizable form and showed how radically first-person action changed when space itself became part of the challenge. Later 6DOF shooters followed its model, and developers have continued returning to it decades later.
