In Myst, the island itself was the puzzle.
When Cyan released Myst in 1993, graphic adventures were established. Myst removed much of the interface and offered something quieter: an island with almost no direction that expected you to work things out for yourself.
Progress came from observation. A distant sound might matter. A machine or piece of architecture could reveal how part of the island worked. Books gave its mysteries context. Its pre-rendered imagery, short video sequences and ambient audio made the world feel tangible.
Myst became a showcase for CD-ROM, showing how the format’s extra storage could support atmosphere as well as spectacle. Its success proved that a slow, nonviolent puzzle game could reach a mass audience.
It helped make multimedia feel less like a technical novelty and more like a place worth entering.
