Shenmue made everyday life part of the adventure.
Yu Suzuki’s Shenmue arrived on Dreamcast in 1999 with an ambition: make its world feel less like a stage and more like a place carrying on around you.
As Ryo Hazuki investigated his father’s murder in 1986 Yokosuka, time kept moving. Residents followed routines and shops opened and closed on schedules. A lead might mean questioning someone in the street, but you could lose time in the arcade or at a capsule toy machine.
That attention to ordinary life helped establish a model for later open-world games. Shenmue showed that immersion could come from detail and routine, not just size.
It also popularized the quick time event, bringing timed button prompts into cinematic action.
Together, those ideas made everyday life itself part of what a virtual world could offer.
