On Arrakis, strategy stopped waiting for its turn.
Westwood Studios released Dune II in 1992, when strategy games were still strongly associated with turn-based play. Earlier games had explored real-time ideas, but Dune II brought them together in a form other developers could readily build on.
Spice kept everything moving. Harvesting it funded new construction and stronger forces, while the battle continued around you. The mouse-driven interface made individual units easy to command, and each mission developed a steady rhythm as your base expanded and pressure grew.
That structure became the blueprint for modern real-time strategy. Blizzard modeled the original Warcraft on Dune II, while Westwood carried the approach forward into Command & Conquer.
Dune II did not invent every ingredient. Its achievement was combining them into the form an entire genre would follow.
