Habbo gave teenagers a room of their own on the internet.
Habbo Hotel launched in the UK in 2001, growing from Sulake’s Finnish Hotelli Kultakala project. Instead of quests or combat, its pixel-art hotel was built around being there with other people.
Players made an avatar and moved through public rooms where conversation was the main activity. Their own rooms became places to shape an identity and invite others in, while furniture gave those spaces personality and value.
That furniture also powered Habbo’s business. Users bought credits with real money and spent them on virtual goods, helping make Habbo an early success built around microtransactions.
Its scale showed that a browser-based virtual world could be both a social destination and a viable business.
Habbo helped make simply hanging out online feel like a game in itself.
