A medieval war game made the Amiga look like the future.
Defender of the Crown arrived in 1986 as the first Cinemaware production. Beneath its spectacle was a compact strategy game about Saxon lords fighting to control England.
The map asked you to raise armies and take territory. Then the view moved closer. Tournaments put a lance in front of you and castle attacks became catapult barrages or sword fights. In 1986, those illustrated scenes looked startlingly lavish.
It did not invent the idea of an “interactive movie,” but it made cinematic presentation part of the attraction itself. The game became an Amiga showcase, and Cinemaware built its identity around the same film-inspired approach.
Its influence reached beyond Cinemaware, helping establish a tradition of medieval strategy games that combined territorial campaigns with dramatic presentation and action.
