Horror became more frightening when the game stopped letting you fight back.
Released by Frictional Games in 2010, Amnesia: The Dark Descent begins with Daniel waking inside Brennenburg Castle with most of his memory gone. Players explore its crumbling halls, solve environmental puzzles and gradually reconstruct what brought him there.
There is no conventional combat. When creatures appear, survival usually means running or finding somewhere to hide. Light helps keep Daniel sane, but lantern oil and tinderboxes are limited; darkness can conceal him from danger even as staying in it begins to distort his senses.
Amnesia’s success helped ignite a new wave of independent first-person horror games built around helplessness and being pursued rather than fighting back. During the 2010s, that structure became one of the genre’s most recognizable approaches.
Its influence also spread through YouTube. Amnesia’s scares were ideal for recorded reactions, and its enormous presence in early horror Let’s Plays helped cement that format as a major form of gaming video.
