Turrican gave the run-and-gun room to roam.
Created by Manfred Trenz for the Commodore 64 in 1990, Turrican paired fast shooting with large levels built for exploration.
The direct route was only part of each stage. Side passages hid extra lives and weapon upgrades, making detours worthwhile while the clock kept moving. The rotating beam let Turrican attack enemies around him instead of simply firing ahead.
Trenz drew openly from Metroid and Psycho-Nics Oscar. Turrican reshaped those influences into a faster, more arcade-like form that became a recognizable model for European home-computer games.
The series also became Factor 5’s breakthrough, helping establish the studio as an important console developer.
Turrican helped define a distinctly European style of action-platforming in which exploration could sit comfortably beside arcade speed.
